Star Wars: The Force Awakens The Feels

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS

star wars episode vii

I did my best to steer clear of spoilers before I got to see Episode VII. But someone insisted on ruining Star Wars for others and posted a comment on a non-Star Wars thread about Kylo Ren killing his parents Han Solo and Leia.

So when Kylo Ren skewered Han with his lightsaber, I was sort of prepared. But seeing the light go out of his eyes was saddening just the same.

Han Solo was from my generation of Star Wars. Every bit of the old Jedi galaxy that I knew as a child was a comforting, welcoming embrace from a long absence. It was a coming home of sorts for me and to lose a central piece of that galaxy was disturbing *insert Vader voice* to say the least.

Han Solo and Chewbacca are home.

I could hardly contain my excitement when I caught a glimpse of the Millennium Falcon buried in the sand. When Rey and Finn took the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, I was fully drawn into the story.

Rey and Finn learn about the Force and Jedi Knights from Han Solo and Chewbacca.

Now, Rey is one of the biggest puzzles of this episode and I dare say, she’s a Skywalker. Her memories of the night Kylo Ren killed the younglings (like Anakin did in Revenge of the Sith) and Luke shutting R2-D2 down, and the island where Luke was hiding, give me no doubt that it was her father that locked up her memory until #TamangPanahon, as they say, comes and the force awakens in her.

It was great to see R2-D2 awaken as well and to be working with BB-8. Cuteness overload!

Of course, BB-8 was an instant love. Much like R2-D2, BB-8 is a feisty, loyal, dependable, cuddly friend. Okay, maybe not so cuddly for everyone since he is made of metal but I do wanna give that little cutie a hug.

BB-8 is this generation’s R2-D2.

I cannot end this piece without giving Han Solo a proper goodbye.

Thank you, Han Solo, for one more wild ride in the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. You will be missed.

NiceThings About The Star Wars Saga: A New Hope

I still remember my induction into the Star Wars cult. It was late morning one day and we had just installed our new betamax (yes, I realize I’m dating myself here) when my brother excitedly introduced me to the spectacular world of a galaxy far, far away.

A New Hope

As the massive, celestial theme blasted through the speakers, my jaw dropped. I knew I was in for a ride. But I remember bugging my brother as the opening crawl rolled. I thought he missed episodes one to three. My little seven-year old mind couldn’t wrap itself around the fact that Episode IV was the first movie in the franchise.

Star Wars Episode IV: The Gateway Star Wars Drug

Watching Princess Leia stand up to the horrifying masked man was inspiring. It was actually the first image that made a mark on my young mind. I would have been terrified of Lord Vader and the armed storm troopers if I were in Princess Leia’s shoes. George Lucas sure beat Disney to bringing gutsy princesses to the screen.

But then again, George Lucas beat a lot of people to a lot of things with Star Wars. Truly ‘epic’ is an understatement.

One of my favorite scenes, of course, was the now iconic Jedi mind control hand wave.

Imagine watching this at 7 years old. Mind = blown!

One of the things that fascinated me about Star Wars was the realms it introduced me to, like Luke’s home – Tatooine – which had two setting suns in one of the scenes.

Luke is drawn by an invisible force to explore the world beyond Tatooine.

Luke’s use of the Force that pulverized the Death Star mere days into training, was of course, impressive. But the death of Obi-Wan Kenobi was both tragic and baffling for a kid such as myself.

If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

Obi-Wan was one of my favorite characters. My consistent favorite in the entire saga is the adorable R2-D2. He’s cute, he’s loyal, and always reliable. I found C3PO annoying when I was a kid and I still kinda do.

The adorable R2-D2 with the rather annoying C3PO.

Of course the love angle between Princess Leia and Han Solo was lost on me at seven. But I appreciated it when I saw the movie again as a teen. I’ve seen the entire saga several times by now and the magic remains.

I can’t wait to see the latest episode in this timeless wonder, till then, I’ll be binge-watching and reliving awesome childhood memories.

May the Force be with you!
