The Philippine Madrigal Singers opened their Christmas concert In Excelsis with “Ding Dong Merrily on High”. The power of their vocals tempered by the beauty of their harmony wowed the audience that filled the Cultural Center of the Philippines on December 21.
Christmas hung in the air like a warm, comfortable blanket as the Madz regaled the crowd with a nice mix of hymns, carols, and OPMs like “Hodie Christus natus est”, “Hark! The herald angels sing”, and “Sana ngayong Pasko”.
They also premiered three songs that night, “Christus Natus”, “Hintayin mo ako sa Pasko”, and “Pasko para sa atin”.
Their glorious voices made me feel like I was being treated into a rare peek into heavens watching angels worship our Maker. It was Christmas as it should be.
My favorite part in every Madz performance is when they let their silliness out. The “Pinoy Snow Medley” arranged by Krina Cayabyab mashed up popular carols “Frosty the Snowman”, “Let it snow”, “Winter wonderland”, “Pasko na namang muli”, and “Noche Buena”. The snowman slash lechon guy dancing was a hit! I’m still laughing my head off thinking about him now. LOL
In Excelsis was a magnificent concert except for the absence of “Carol of the bells” from the repertoire. It would have made my night perfect but, well, Madz was perfect so all’s good.
Hope to watch them live again soon minus the terror of watching them from so high up in the cheap seats. Time to put aside a “Madz fund” hehe
